Giving Face

I out a hold on the hard copy at my library, forgot, and put a hold on the eaudiobook through Libby as soon as it was added. There are enough pictures of Mendez’s past adventures to make checking out the physical book worth it. However, the audiobook is excellent. The narrator strikes the perfect balance of personality and calmly factual.

I’ve read a few memoirs from former intelligence officers (including Tony’s). Mendez tells you as much as she can. She has lead a fascinating, trailblazing life. Holy misogyny Batman. Why are federal acronyms, especially intelligence agencies, so slow to get with the times? Jonna proved again and again her value to the agency and so many men had no respect for it.

I also enjoyed some of the more personal aspects of her life. So many women were expected to sacrifice their personal lives for the agency. Jonna struck a balance for many years before stepping away. She even got to talk about the behind the scenes experience of Argo in a way Tony didn’t in his books.

This is an excellent memoir to take to the beach. Eventful, interesting, and easy to read. 5/5
