February Wrap-Up and March TBR

My Insta showcased black authors while my actual reading went in a slightly different direction. I’m not sure why I bother with TBRs since it usually winds up going sideways anyway.

February Wrap-Up

Rocket Raccoon Vol 1 by Skottie Young

A Little Free Library dubs that was quite fun and ended in a satisfying way. I can carry on with the series if I choose or leave it and be fine.

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

I was curious. It was cute. 4/5

Aquicorn Cove by Katie O’Neill

A lovely middle grade graphic novel that has environmentalism and magic. 4/5

A Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

A story told in verse of loss and gun violence. 4.5/5

Not listed is the half of Becoming by Michelle Obama I read before I had to return it to the library. They’re forcing renovations on our apartment while we’re living here + a physical job + personal fuckery = not a ton of reading got done this month.

I’m back on the list to get Becoming from the library. I’ll probably get it around April.

March TBR

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rovers Solomon

I read most of this but have 80 pages left. It’s been brilliant. Highly recommend.

Kid Gloves by Lucy Knisley

Another graphic memoir from the fantastic Lucy Knisley. This one is about her journey to becoming a mother.

The Invited by Jennifer McMahon

I won an advanced copy so guess what’s coming with me on vacation?

Maybe I can actually get close to this TBR. February hasn’t been great so here’s hoping March is better.

January Wrap-Up and February TBR

I set my GoodReads goal as 101 books. I’m not sure I’m going to pull it off but it should be fun trying.

January Wrap-Up

We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix

I devoured this. Hendrix writes some very female positive horror and I forking love it. Kris is a just one member of a metal band that faded into oblivion while one member rose to super stardom. But he had help. 5/5

All the Sad Songs by Summer Pierre

A graphic memoir about growing up, music, and how it shapes us. 4/5

Whose Boat Is This Boat? by The Late Show

An illustrated book showing just how ridiculous and useless 45 can be. 4/5

Hazards of Time Travel by Joyce Carol Oates

In a dystopian future, independent thought is punished by sending you into exile in the past. How does Adriane/Mary Ellen cope? The voice reminded me greatly of The Bell Jar which felt very appropriate. Definitely worth a read. 4/5

The Trouble with Women by Jacky Fleming

A fun, snarky look at what it took to be a genius a couple hundred years ago. Funny but a little subtle. 3/5

February is known for Valentine’s Day and Black History Month. I’ve never liked Valentine’s Day but will be reading a much hyped romance novel. For BHM going to do a photo series of books by African or African-American descent on my Instagram (@JesseJaneReads). I’m hoping to read a few of them.

February TBR

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

A GoodWill find that has gotten all the hype.

Becoming by Michelle Obama

My library hold finally came in for the latter days of January.

I’m thinking about another romance and a couple of works from other black authors for the month but we’ll see how it shakes out.
